Student Applications

ATSILS regrets that with its busy offices and biosecurity protocols in place, only three ATSILS locations are available for student placements during the COVID-19 pandemic. Efforts to re-open the Student Workplace project from 1 March 2021 onwards have resulted in us being unable to provide adequate biosecurity in the form of a suitable desk arrangement, prioritising quality placements.

Shared office desks (“hot desking”) for students is no longer an acceptable standard in ATSILS facilities.

  • We regret the diminished opportunities available and look forward to having more space and facilities in the near future.
  • The issue is not about COVID-19 vaccination but is due to a restriction in space and social distancing, and on Managers’ supervision capacity within the Student Project when significant managerial time and Rostered Attendance is now needed with ATSILS staff working with clients during the Corona Virus Pandemic.

For any concerns, please write to careers@atsils.org.au and we will endeavour to reply within a month of your message being sent.

A review of this decision will be made on 12th January 2022 when the COVID-19 pandemic Queensland Health Advice regarding Border Management and other considerations is clear.

Student Placements

The Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Legal Service (Qld) Limited was established nearly 50 years ago to provide culturally sensitive legal services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients and their families.   This is primarily in the jurisdictions of Criminal Law, Family Law & Child Protection, and Civil Law (which includes Human Rights Law, Coronial Enquiries, and other legal services).

We welcome students to our workplaces across Queensland, usually within one of our Brisbane or some Regional offices. Students studying Law, Justice, Indigenous Studies, Advocacy, or a combination relevant to our Vision and Mission are encouraged to apply.

While ATSILS does not generally offer internship fees to students we can provide a strong introduction to cultural competence and other invaluable learning experiences. We provide a diverse range of activity and opportunity in all our workplaces. In your application, please be specific about your requirements and submit the required supporting documents.

Student Placements – Online Application Instructions

ATSILS regrets we are unable to currently accept Student Placement Applications.

A review of this decision will be made on 1 July 2021.

13 years old and left locked in isolation for days.
Our children don't belong in jail, let alone be kept alone in a cell for weeks at a time.
The Queensland youth justice system is crumbling, yet they want to put more children in detention.

“Tough on Crime” measures are counter-productive to addressing offending.

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children who are among the most vulnerable in our community will be disproportionately affected and cop the brunt of this.
