Our Mackay Office seeks a skilled Family/Civil Law advocate.

Your experience with Family Law casework and hopefully success with matters to hearings (Family, Domestic Violence, etc), plus Civil Law casework will be highly regarded. An interest in developing skills in Child Protection matters will be well rewarded. Your commitment to social justice and the occasional support for your peers may also provide minor Criminal Law work opportunity – e.g. Duty Lawyer matters in Domestic Violence/Youth matters.

For the experienced Legal Practitioner, ATSILS also provides opportunity for Specialisation as an Independent Children’s Lawyer and Separate Representative supporting the attendance at LAQ required events and ongoing practice.

ATSILS seeks a skilled Legal Practitioner in Criminal Law. Our dedicated workplace supports many communities, in adult and youth jurisdictions. Provide high quality legal representation to clients in a variety of teams, based in any Queensland location with significant expectation of legal services to Regional and Remote Offices throughout Queensland. The ability to travel by road, air, and in rare cases short sea trips, will be essential for this role. It is estimated that 50% of work time will involve travel for extended periods, some of which are in remote locations.

To be successful in this role, you will need at least five years’ PAE experience, or other demonstrated advocacy experience, resilience for a range of complex work and ability to develop culturally competent service skills. Your experience with both Duty Lawyer type responsibilities and Hearings will be a distinct advantage, as will provision of service in the youth jurisdiction. Court Support Officers and our Administration Staff provide extensive service to this role and know our communities well.

Our Workforce Development Strategy will enable you to undertake both team and formal training to succeed. We will interview promptly and look to candidates who can commence within seven weeks’ of interview.

Our Mackay Team offers an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander candidate full-time social justice court and teamwork; one ongoing vacancy due to an internal transfer and a Parenting Leave Cover fixed-term position until July 2024. You must be a steady computer user, good driver, reliable and resilient. We offer opportunity to make a difference for our people within the criminal justice system, case by case. You do not need to be studying law or justice to do a great job with us. ATSILS claims exemption under the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Act in identifying this role for an Indigenous candidate.

While you are not required to carry a current Queensland Government Blue Card to work with ATSILS as a Court Support Officer, you are required to have a current National Police Criminal Record check prior to commencing work with our people or accessing any client file, database record or attend Court.
