Legal Practitioner Vacancies

Legal Practitioner (Criminal Law) | Brisbane | Closing 21st September 4pm

Apply Now

With the success of secured funding and recognised need for increased service, ATSILS is pleased to offer a new role in Criminal Law based in its Head Office in the legal precinct of Brisbane’s CBD for a minimum term of three (3) years. This role would suit someone with some criminal hearings work or a proven capacity to rapidly develop confidence and solid outcomes in court. An interest in building culturally competent legal service skill is also highly desirable.

If you have little criminal law duty lawyer/advocacy experience you may still get an interview should you be able to prove capacity to think on your feet, and demonstrate current understanding on the application of the Criminal Code and Juvenile Justice Act with aplomb. This role will also suit someone who has ambition to join one of Queensland’s busiest criminal law practices in a social justice arena and has flexibility to learn on your feet. You may find yourself in the Magistrates Court on your first or second day, equally, you may work alongside legal practitioners in hearings or the Indigenous Sentencing List, or the Children’s Court. As you will see from the position description, the role involves being available for 24/7 oncall rostered duties.

People

You can rely on the support of our busy legal team, which is lead by our Principal Legal Officer, and assisted by our Director of Criminal Law. We have eight criminal lawyers, plus seven Aboriginal Court Support Officers and Law Clerks, and our dedicated administration team. Our Brisbane office is also home to our Law Reform & Community Legal Education service, the Royal Commission into Institutionalised responses to Child Sexual Assault, and specialist projects such as Coronial Enquiries & Inquests/Police Complaints.

Place and Process

Please note that interviews will be held on or around 29th September, in Brisbane or online with Skype, for one hour to those who follow our recruitment process in full, complete the online application form, meet our requirements, and are available to be interviewed by an EEO Recruitment panel. Please read our Position Description regarding the Selection Criteria, Duties and work conditions.

Legal Practitioner (Criminal Law) | Southport | Closing 22nd September 4pm

With the success of secured funding and recognised need for increased service, ATSILS is pleased to offer a new role in Criminal Law based in its Southport Office near the Courthouse, for a minimum term of three (3) years. This role would suit someone with some criminal hearings work or a proven capacity to rapidly develop confidence and solid outcomes in court. An interest in building culturally competent legal service skill is also highly desirable.

People

You can rely on the support of our busy legal team, which is lead by our Principal Legal Officer, and assisted by our Director of Criminal Law. In Southport we service more than one court, so it is possible you will be working in Court during your first week (dependent on your skill and experience). Our Regional Manager has supervised many graduating law students, graduates and the recently admitted, so you are guaranteed steady mentoring and live court experience. You will be assisted by our Aboriginal Court Support Officer who has strong links to community and provides an ideal service to clients, community and lawyers alike.

Court Support Officer Vacancies

Court Support Officer (Temp Position) | Townsville | Closing 21st Sep 4pm

Apply Now

Aboriginal &/or Torres Strait Islander candidates only

A sudden and temporary leave of absence in our dedicated team has created an entry opportunity for an energetic candidate to join us. The role is designed for clients to see a friendly brother or sister at a critical time, in Townsville and some surrounding communities. Principally you are expected to interact with clients in a manner that provides them with an understanding of the criminal justice system and their rights within it. You are also there to provide an efficient and culturally sensitive assistance to our 10 lawyers, while responding to the needs of clients.

The role will attract normal paid leave conditions until end of February 2016, and has a negotiable base plus Superannuation and other benefits/options. There is a possibility that the role could be extended up until 2020 should our circumstances change. While having tertiary qualifications (particularly in law or justice) is desirable, your strong organisational skill, sound common sense, confidentiality, reliability and cultural pride is also very important.

People

Ideally you will have a keen interest in the criminal justice system and know community well. You will enjoy working with our clients, including a growing number of young people – particularly men and boys. You will also be happy to work with a diverse team, some of whom have worked for years serving our people and improving access to justice, and others will be recently arrived, like you. Skilled in clerical tasks, organised and reliable – our team will appreciate your professionalism and willingness to learn. While you have at least two good references, you will be able to commence promptly and be guided by our dedicated team in the office and at court in your first few days. You are willing to be “on-call” in a team roster for after-hours 24/7 phone support. You are not expected to drive our clients, nor use your car for work purposes.

Place and Process

Townsville CBD houses our air-conditioned office and it is close to the Court House and police facilities. Please note that interviews will be held on Friday 11th of September to those who follow our recruitment process in full, complete the online application form, meet our requirements, and are available to be interviewed by an EEO Recruitment panel for one hour. Please read our Position Description regarding the Selection Criteria, Duties and work conditions.
